REFORM I WILL CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR
July 27, 2009
By Senator John McCain
The Arizona Daily Star
Our health care system must be reformed and this is as an historic opportunity to achieve the changes that Americans need, now more than ever. The health care industry accounts for nearly one-sixth of our economy and affects every American family and household budget. As Americans, we are fortunate to have the highest quality of health care, one that draws patients from around the world who seek the best medical care. And while we can all agree on the need for reform, it’s not the quality of care that needs to change but rather the cost.
Health care reform must focus on implementing fundamental changes that will reduce escalating costs while increasing access to affordable coverage and innovative care. Further, we need to revise the federal tax system to allow families access to more flexible and affordable coverage options regardless of where you work or where you live. We also must address medical malpractice insurance, similar to what the State of California implemented, to protect health care providers from unlimited frivolous lawsuits.
Unfortunately the legislation moving through Congress now accomplishes none of these goals. Current legislation would cost $1.5 trillion dollars, puts the government in control of our country’s entire health care system, and leaves millions without coverage. Further, this plan will harm the driving engine of our economy – small business. Employer mandates and new health care taxes will lead to increased job loss and further damage to our economy.
Every day that goes by without reform leads to another day where millions of Americans will become or remain uninsured. The American people would have much more confidence in this effort if both Republicans and Democrats were working together to enact meaningful health care reform that benefits everyone while doing no harm. That is the reform I will continue to fight to enact.
Senator John McCain is the senior Senator from Arizona.
